FIBER ART + MIXED MEDIA
by Joanne Wang
ARTIST STATEMENT
Utilizing embroidery, mixed media, everyday materials, and secondhand or discarded textiles, my work is centered around a time consuming process that explores the invisible themes of labor, time, waste, and gender that are embedded within the fabric of our consumer society.
I fully immerse myself in the physicality of a material and create not only a meditative practice in my process, but also an end product that illustrates this approach. By manipulating a material through repetition and multiplication, I create visually stimulating textures, flowy compositions, and playful color stories that are reminiscent of the patterns, feelings, and moments we collectively find in nature. My work is an abstract exploration of the connections between forgotten or discarded materials, consumerism, climate change, and our beautiful planet Earth.
